10-Day Japan Itinerary: Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka + Nara

10 Days in Japan: The Golden Route with Room to Breathe (Tokyo 4, Kyoto 4, Osaka 2)

Ten days is where the Golden Route stops being a highlights sprint. You get a spare day in Tokyo for a day trip, a fourth Kyoto night that unlocks Nara, and a proper Osaka stay instead of a stopover.

The plan, day by day

  • Day 1 — Arrive in Tokyo: check in, neighbourhood evening.
  • Day 2 — Tokyo east: Asakusa and Senso-ji, Ueno or Akihabara.
  • Day 3 — Tokyo west: Meiji Shrine, Harajuku, Shibuya, Shinjuku at night.
  • Day 4 — Tokyo choice day: Kamakura (Great Buddha and temples) or Nikko (shrines and waterfalls) as a day trip — or a slow Tokyo day of cafes and neighbourhoods.
  • Day 5 — Tokyo to Kyoto: shinkansen, afternoon settling into Gion / Higashiyama.
  • Day 6 — Kyoto east: Kiyomizu-dera early, Kodai-ji, Yasaka, Pontocho in the evening.
  • Day 7 — Kyoto west: Arashiyama and Tenryu-ji, then Kinkaku-ji.
  • Day 8 — Nara day trip: Todai-ji and the deer park, sake tasting in Fushimi on the way back if you like.
  • Day 9 — Kyoto to Osaka: move to Osaka, Osaka Castle or the Umeda skyline, Dotonbori at night.
  • Day 10 — Osaka: Kuromon Market and last shopping, then the airport train to Kansai.

The branch points

  • Hakone instead of the Tokyo day trip: if Mt Fuji matters more than Kamakura or Nikko, go from Tokyo to Hakone for the Day 4 day trip, or take a night from Osaka for a Hakone overnight on the way to Kyoto (best at 11+ days).
  • Hiroshima: at 10 days it fits only as a long day trip from Osaka or Kyoto. With 12+ days, give it 2 nights.

Why 4 nights in Kyoto

The fourth night is what turns Kyoto from a checklist into a place. It absorbs the Nara day, gives Arashiyama a morning without crowds, and leaves one unplanned evening — the one most travelers end up remembering.
